Fish Oil: Good or Bad for Your Health


Fish oil is a common dietary supplement that supplies omega-3 fatty acids to the body. Due to the term oil, some people have a hunch that fish oil is unhealthy, while others believe Omega-3 in the oil type supports heart health and helps treat a range of health conditions. What does science say? Should you consume fish oil or not?  


The debate ‘whether fish oil is healthy or not’ began in 1971 with a Danish study, which suggested that Inuits in Greenland were healthier than Denmark’s Inuits. According to the study, a high marine-fat diet of the Inuit population in Greenland protected it against incidences like heart disease. 


Since then, researchers worldwide conducted a series of experiments to discover the reality. Several recent studies have found that people who consume fish have lower rates of heart disease than those who don’t eat fish. 


What is Fish Oil


It is an oil extracted from fish. Some of the most common fish used for oil are anchovies, herring, and tuna. The oil type is known to be a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have many health benefits, including protection against many diseases. 


As per recommendations by the World Health Organization (WHO), one should have at least one or two servings of fish every week. Those who are unable to eat the suggested portions can use fish oil supplements to fulfill their omega-3 fatty acid intake. 


Fish oil is also an excellent source of vitamin A and D. 


Benefits of Fish Oil 

  • It Helps Reduce Inflammation


Chronic inflammation is linked to conditions like diabetes and obesity. An effective way to stay protected against these diseases is to reduce inflammation. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, fish oil becomes an effective option to use for treating chronic inflammation.  

  • It Supports Heart Health


Heart disease is one of the most common causes of death around the world. As per research, people who consume fish are at less risk of developing heart disease than individuals who don’t eat fish at all. 


Fish or fish oil helps increase levels of good cholesterol, lower triglycerides, and control blood pressure. 

  • It Treats Mental Disorders


The human brain contains 60% fat, which includes a big part of omega-3 fatty acids. Therefore, these acids key elements for brain health. Fish oil supplies these healthy acids to the brain and helps improve its health.  


According to studies, fish oil can be helpful in treating certain mental disorders. For example, it decreases the risks of psychotic disorders. Also, the recommended consumption of fish oil helps control symptoms of schizophrenia.   


Should You Try Fish Oil?


Some studies suggest healthy individuals who eat a few servings of fish per week do not need fish oil or fish oil supplements. If you are not among them, get oil supplements to reap the health benefits of fish. 


Although there isn’t any set recommended dosage of fish oil, total omega-3 intake has recommendations. As per experts, 250–500 mg of dosage is beneficial for heart health.

Fish Oil is an excellent source of Omega-3s, which promote physical health and brain development. Add it to your daily diet and stay protected against many diseases.
