The Best Fish Stew Recipe

Fish stew is one of the tastiest dishes that anyone can conveniently make at home. This dish often consists of a delicious white fish stew, which is oozing with earthy flavors and rich tomato sauce. It is a great dish to prepare if you want an easy and quick to whip meal, which is not that heavy. The good thing about any fish stew recipe is that you can easily customize it based on your preference.

This fish stew recipe is one great version that you may want to try making at home.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup canola oil – Make adjustments by adding either more or less of the oil based on your preference and what is necessary.
  • 1 tbsp. minced garlic
  • 1 tsp. each of fresh thyme, curry powder, white pepper, and minced ginger
  • 1 medium-sized onion (chopped)
  • 8-oz. tomato sauce
  • ½ to 1 tbsp. smoked paprika
  • 1 to 2 tsp. bouillon powder
  • 3 lbs. white fish – Cut it up into steaks.
  • 2 tbsps. chopped parsley
  • 1 medium-sized sliced bell pepper
  • 3 to 4 cups water or chicken broth
  • 7 to 8 pieces of Thai basil leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the fish by washing it carefully then draining and patting it dry using clean towels or paper towels.
  2. Put a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. Add onion then sauté it for around one minute.
  3. Mix in the ginger, garlic, curry powder, paprika, and thyme. Once the ingredients are added and mixed, spend two more minutes to sauté.
  4. The next step involves pouring the tomato sauce then putting in the bouillon powder and white pepper. Stir this mixture for around one minute. Spend around 10 to 15 minutes to simmer the mixture. After that, pour the water or broth together with salt. Stir well.
  5. Add the fish steaks, basil, and bell pepper. Simmer for around 10 minutes or until the fish becomes flaky or completely cooked. You can make an adjustment on how thick the soup is using salt, water, and spices.
  6. Serve while warm after sprinkling some parsley over it. You may also want to serve it over white rice or whole-wheat couscous.

Additional Tips 

When it comes to making fish stew, remember that you can use any firm white fish, like cod or halibut. You may also want to use tilapia or red snapper in some of your fish stew recipes. As much as possible, avoid delicate fish when making fish stew, like sole. Oily fish, like tuna, should also be avoided.

If you want to further improve the taste and richness of your stew, then consider adding other seafood, like clams, scallops, and shrimp. As for the side dishes, take note that you have plenty of options. While it is a dish that you can eat on its own, you can also serve it over couscous, brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, or white rice.

Another alternative is to serve it with sourdough roll or French bread that has a nice crust.
