Vertigo refers to a feeling or sensation that you or the environment you are in is spinning or moving. It is different from dizziness because vertigo is characterized by an illusion that there is movement. If you feel like you are the one who is moving, the condition is referred to as subjective vertigo. In case you have an illusion that the environment is moving then you are dealing with objective vertigo.

Several factors can cause vertigo and the sensations and symptoms that come along with it. Among the causes of this condition are:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Position Vertigo (BPPV) – This condition happens whenever small calcium particles clump or group together in your inner ear’s canals. This will cause your inner ear to signal your brain to do certain body and head movements linked to gravity. BPPV is also characterized by the short sensation of movement that may be around fifteen seconds to several minutes long. If this happens to you then it would be a big help to keep your balance.
  • Meniere’s disease – Vertigo may also be caused by Meniere’s disease. It is because episodes of vertigo are among the common symptoms of this condition together with hearing loss and tinnitus or ringing in the ears. Those suffering from this disease will most likely experience a sudden onset of chronic vertigo accompanied by fluctuating loss of hearing.
  • Inflamed inner ear – Another possible cause of vertigo is the inflammation of your inner ear. If this happens, then expect sudden vertigo episodes linked to hearing loss. You may suffer from inner ear inflammation that might trigger vertigo because of a bacterial or viral infection affecting that area. You have to heal from this infection to say goodbye to its symptoms, including vertigo attacks.

Apart from the already mentioned causes, there is also a great chance for you to experience vertigo attacks or episodes due to reduced blood flow to the bottom part of your brain, multiple sclerosis, neck injury, head trauma, hormonal changes, migraine, anxiety, and diabetes complications.

Symptoms of Vertigo

You are most likely suffering from an attack or episode of vertigo if you feel a spinning, swaying, or tilting sensation. You will also have the feeling of being out of balance or being pulled in one direction. Some people also say that there is a sensation of movement or disorientation each time they are dealing with a vertigo attack. Apart from that, you may also experience other symptoms, including:

  • Abnormal eye movements
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Sweating
  • Hearing loss
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Headache
  • A lower level of consciousness
  • Visual disturbances
  • Speaking and walking difficulties
  • Weakness

The symptoms’ duration can last for a few minutes to several hours depending on how severe the attack is. Also, take note that the symptoms you might experience can be either chronic, which might mean that they are also constant, or episodic. You will be at risk of dealing with the symptoms of vertigo because of a sudden change in your position or an abrupt movement.

If you deal with any of the mentioned symptoms then you do not have to worry because in most cases, vertigo is treatable. You can treat it using certain prescription medicines, like beta-blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, and calcium channel blockers.

If you do not want to take any prescription medicine then you may want to resolve your vertigo symptoms using home remedies. One option is drinking ginger tea, which can lessen the effects and symptoms of vertigo. Ensure that you also stay hydrated to avoid the symptoms. You may also want to use essential oils once you experience an episode of vertigo.

Make sure to sit down and relax right after the moment you feel dizzy. It also helps to have a cane around, especially if your vertigo attacks significantly affect your sense of balance and cause walking difficulties. You may use it to prevent serious injuries and falls during an episode.
